Size: Tiny—about 1/16–1/8 inch long
Appearance: Small, fuzzy, moth‑like flies with heart‑ or triangular‑shaped wings covered in fine hairs, giving them a gray or dark, “dusty” look. They rest on walls near sinks, tubs, floor drains, and utility rooms.
Habitat: Drain flies breed in the slimy organic film (biofilm) that builds up inside drains, pipes, sump pits, and other constantly damp areas. Larvae live in this sludge; adults rarely travel far from the breeding drain.
Concerns: Drain flies do not bite, but heavy infestations are unsanitary and indicate chronic moisture and buildup in plumbing or nearby areas.
Prevention Tips:
- Regularly clean sinks, tub, and floor drains with a brush to remove organic buildup.
- Fix leaks and eliminate standing water around drains and utility areas.
- Keep drain covers in place and maintain good general sanitation.
