Size: Cat, dog, human, and rat fleas are all very small, about 1/8 inch long, small, dark, and fast‑moving.
Appearance: ranging from Reddish‑brown to dark brown, laterally flattened, wingless bodies with powerful hind legs for jumping. Despite the names, all fleas commonly infest both cats, dogs, rodents, and wildlife, and will bite humans.
Habitat: These are the most common flea species in Missouri homes. They typically stay close to their preferred hosts and the areas where those animals rest, such as pet bedding, carpets, kennels, nests, and hidden spaces in or around buildings.
Bites & Concerns: Flea bites cause itchy red welts and can lead to flea allergy dermatitis in pets. Fleas can transmit tapeworms and some disease agents between animals.
